Shelly energy meters connected to your maintenance

A Shelly meter clipped around the cables of a switchboard or a machine already knows how much power it draws, minute by minute. FreeMaint turns that into maintenance: a motor that suddenly draws more, a compressor that runs all night, a kitchen hood left on — each one an alert on the right asset, and if you choose, a work order.

In short

Shelly Gen2 and Gen3 energy meters, plugs and relays — Pro 3EM, EM Gen3, Pro EM-50, Plug S Gen3, 1PM Gen3 — connect to FreeMaint without a gateway. You paste a short script that FreeMaint generates into the device’s web page; it sends power, energy, voltage and current every 60 seconds over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Each value becomes a channel that can raise alerts, feed run hours or an energy meter.

What a Shelly meter brings to FreeMaint

No gateway, no integrator

FreeMaint generates a script that already contains your access key. Paste it into the Shelly’s own web page, start it, tick Run on startup, and the device appears in FreeMaint within a minute.

Power and energy per phase, every minute

Depending on the model, each phase reports its power, voltage, current and energy counter. Energy totals are stored as counters that only go up, so the consumption between two readings is exact, even across a device restart.

Included in Business

Alerts on abnormal consumption

A threshold on a motor’s power, a no-data rule on a critical feeder, a rate-of-change rule on a sudden spike: an alert opens, the right roles are notified and a work order can be created on the asset.

Included in Business

Run hours for meter-based maintenance

Count the time a machine draws power above a level you choose, feed the asset’s run-hours meter, and let the preventive plan trigger by itself.

Included in Business

Energy cost and CO2 without retyping

Link the energy channel to an energy meter: one reading every 15 minutes arrives with its cost from your tariff and its CO2 from your emission factor, ready for the energy dashboard and the monthly report.

Supported devices

These models are recognised and decoded by FreeMaint. FreeMaint sells no hardware: each link opens the manufacturer’s own page.

Compatible: validated on the manufacturer’s documentation. Lab-tested: tested on the physical device by FreeMaint.

Which Shelly to choose

The Shelly Pro 3EM is the three-phase meter for a main switchboard or a large machine: it mounts on a DIN rail, measures three phases with current clamps and connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The Shelly EM Gen3 and the Pro EM-50 measure single-phase circuits — a sub-board, a pump, a cold room. The Plug S Gen3 is a plug with power metering for equipment that plugs into a socket, and the 1PM Gen3 is a relay with power metering that fits behind a switch or in a machine’s enclosure.

All five use the same Shelly Gen2/Gen3 interface, and FreeMaint recognises them automatically. Other Shelly Gen2 and Gen3 devices with power metering also send their measurements; you can set their model by hand on the device page. A licensed electrician must install anything that sits inside a switchboard.

  • Pro 3EM — three-phase, DIN rail, Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • EM Gen3 and Pro EM-50 — single-phase circuits
  • Plug S Gen3 — plug-in equipment
  • 1PM Gen3 — relay with power metering

What maintenance does with the measurements

Power tells you more than a bill. A conveyor motor that draws ten percent more at the same load is often a bearing or an alignment problem before it becomes a breakdown. A compressor that never stops at night points to an air leak. A ventilation unit that draws nothing during opening hours has tripped. Each of these patterns can be watched by an alert rule on the right channel, attached to the right asset.

The same measurements count run hours. Instead of reading a counter on the machine each month, FreeMaint counts the minutes the motor draws power and writes the total into the asset’s meter, by default once an hour. A plan such as a belt check every 500 hours or an oil change every 2,000 hours then triggers on real use.

From the script to the dashboard

The script FreeMaint generates reads the Shelly’s measurements every 60 seconds and sends them to FreeMaint over HTTPS with your access key in a header. If the Shelly reboots after a power cut, Run on startup starts the script again. If you lose the key, generate a new one from the integration and paste the new script; the old key can stay valid for 24 hours while you update the device.

Values sent in watt-hours are converted to kilowatt-hours, so a Shelly and a utility meter add up correctly on the energy dashboard. Each device shows its last message; once you confirm it, FreeMaint flags it as late, then offline, if the script stops.

Plans and what to know before buying

Connecting devices is part of the Business plan, at $99 per month per company, flat, with 100 active channels — enough for many meters, each phase counting as its own channel. FreeMaint sells no hardware: buy the Shelly from the manufacturer or a distributor. The models above carry the Compatible badge, which means they were validated against Shelly’s documentation.

Connect a Shelly in four steps

  1. 1

    Create the connection

In Connected devices → Integrations, click Connect a device, choose Shelly (Wi-Fi / Ethernet) and name it.

  2. 2

    Copy the script

FreeMaint shows the script once, with your access key already inside.

  3. 3

    Paste it into the Shelly

Open the device’s web page, then Scripts → Create script, paste and save.

  4. 4

    Start it for good

Click Start and turn on Run on startup. The device appears in FreeMaint within a minute: confirm it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a gateway or a hub?

No. The Shelly sends its measurements straight to FreeMaint over your network’s internet connection, using the script FreeMaint generates.

Which Shelly models are supported?

The Pro 3EM, EM Gen3, Pro EM-50, Plug S Gen3 and 1PM Gen3 are recognised automatically. Other Shelly Gen2 and Gen3 devices with power metering also work; you can set their model on the device page.

How often are measurements sent?

Every 60 seconds. Energy counters are totals that only go up, so the consumption between two readings stays exact.

Can FreeMaint switch the Shelly relay on or off?

Not through FreeMaint Connect, which only receives measurements. Remote commands belong to the energy control features of the Enterprise plan and always ask for confirmation.

Do I buy the Shelly from FreeMaint?

No. FreeMaint sells no hardware. Each supported model links to the manufacturer’s own page.

What happens if the device loses power?

With Run on startup turned on, the script starts again when the Shelly reboots. Meanwhile FreeMaint marks a confirmed device as late, then offline, and a no-data rule can alert you.
