Customize categories for work orders, assets, parts, and costs.

Creating a Category

Categories are defined by your company, not by FreeMaint — the list is not fixed, and you never need to ask us to add one. Creating a category requires the "categories:create" permission, which the Administrator and Manager roles have by default; a role with read-only access sees the categories but no create option.

From the form you are filling in

Open the "Category" dropdown on any work order, asset, part, tool or PM form and click "+ Create new category" at the bottom. The category is created and selected immediately, without leaving the form.

From Company Settings

Go to Company Settings > Categories. Each entity type has its own tab, with "Add Category" plus edit and delete. This is also where you set a colour, an icon and a description.
